Throughout history Sugarcane plant has acclimated very well in some Costa Rican areas. Specifically the Western Central Valley which was the best favorite area for cultivation, that is why Alajuela, Grecia and Poás excelled in this agricultural activity.
Since the colony, sugarcane production achieved a considerable development, especially for the preparation of the “Tapa de Dulce” ( molded small cakes of firm compact brown sugar).
The “trapiches” (sugar mill) increased in the area and the “Plaza del Dulce” (Place located in Alajuela), were included in the list of the places with the highest profitable commercial activity in the country.
Technology advance provided the necessary machinery to transform sugarcane juice into sugar, what revolutionized the market and the customs of the people. It was therefore the vision and economic capacity to invest in an activity that would be of great importance, not only for the influence area but also for the whole country.
In its first operations year, Victoria cooperative processed almost 30,000 tons of cane in the 1943-1944 harvest. This number gradually went up to a 500% increase. The growth was seen, because the expansion of the cultivation area, introduction of new and better varieties of cane and the application of new technologies, which increased in yield per hectare.
Nowadays Victoria mill is one of the best in the country, both for its infrastructure and its production capacity (250 thousand tons of sugar cane harvest), due to modernity of its equipment and the professionalism of its staff.

Varieties of sugar that we process:
White Sugar Plantation: This sugar is for massive consumption. It has a standard appearance, texture and flavor, with a color lower than 280 units ICUMSA (International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis)
150 Special White Sugar: It is whiter and thinner than table sugar; it is used for preparations where this finish is needed. This sugar has a lower color than 150 ICUMSA units.
Raw Sugar Demerara: This raw sugar has a medium-sized crystal and shows a golden color, it keeps a layer of honey adhered that provides a flavor and typical color of sugar cane juice. Color between: 1000-1700 ICUMSA units.
Refined Sugar 45: In this sugar the crystal is thinner and the color is whiter, it is ideal for bakery and recipes. The color of this type of sugar is less than 45 ICUMSA units.
